Soft fronds.
A greener corner.
Airy fronds soften a balcony corner. Leave space for the arching leaves and choose a position sheltered from wind and harsh sun.
A bright window or protected balcony with filtered light works well. Avoid air-conditioning outlets and narrow walkways where fronds are brushed repeatedly.
Planting & styling guide
How do I settle in a multi-cane Areca palm?
Protect the roots and fronds
- Let the fronds open and check the width before choosing the final spot.
- Keep the nursery pot initially and check moisture inside the root ball.
- When roots are crowded, use a slightly larger draining pot.
- Keep the cane bases at the same level and disturb roots minimally.
- Water evenly and drain; do not let the whole root ball become bone dry.
Keep the growing tips intact
Do not cut across the top of a cane to reduce height. Remove fully brown fronds at the base with clean tools, while retaining healthy green growth.
How do I keep the fronds tidy without topping?
- SunlightGive the whole clump bright filtered daylight. Keep outer fronds clear of hot glass and curtains that rub the leaflets.
- WateringCheck root-zone moisture when tips brown; do not assume every dry tip needs more water. Avoid both a soaked pot and prolonged complete drying.
- Fronds & feedingRemove fully brown fronds at the base with clean tools. Retain green fronds and the cane tips; cutting the top is not a way to make a palm branch.
- Before a typhoonMove balcony pots into a protected position before strong winds arrive. During cold spells, keep the palm away from exposed windows and drafts.
How do I style the palm as a soft screen?
Let the fronds form the upper screen, with lower separate pots in front. Keep a gap for leaf movement and access to the soil.

Frequently asked questions
Areca Palm · Chrysalidocarpus lutescens
Can I cut the tops if the palm is too tall?
Do not cut through the growing tip of a cane to shorten it. Choose a suitable height and keep healthy green fronds; a palm will not respond like a branching shrub.
Read moreWhy do the leaf tips turn brown?
Dry air, irregular watering, salt build-up or root stress can contribute. Check moisture and drainage, move it away from air-conditioning drafts and avoid adding fertiliser as a quick fix. Brown tissue will not turn green again.
Read moreCan it stay on a Hong Kong balcony?
A sheltered, bright balcony can work. Acclimatise it gradually, screen harsh afternoon sun and make sure rain drains freely. Move the pot to shelter before typhoons and protect it during cold spells.
Read moreShould I choose by height or leaf width?
Check both. Compare the listed heights with the ceiling, then allow room for arching fronds around furniture and doors. The scene size guide shows scale, not the exact spread of your supplied plant.
