Planting & styling guide
How do I settle in this clump of Bird of Paradise?
In a pot
- Choose a bright position with room beside and above the leaf fans. Keep long stalks clear of curtains and doors.
- Keep the nursery pot while it settles. Increase direct sun gradually if the plant was previously under cover.
- Check the mix below the surface. Water thoroughly when the upper layer begins drying, then drain; do not let the whole root ball become severely dry.
- Repot when roots fill the container, using a slightly larger pot with drainage. Keep the crown at its original depth.
- Remove dead leaves and spent flower stalks near the base with clean secateurs. Keep healthy leaves and emerging growth intact.
A starting size, with room to grow
The listed 80–100 cm height and 35–50 cm width are size references, not mature limits. Before selecting an outer planter, check the actual nursery pot against the original W32 × H28 cm reference.
How should I care for it in Hong Kong?
- SunlightOutside, choose sun or partial shade with shelter from strong wind. Indoors, place it beside a very bright window; being in an indoor collection does not mean it tolerates a dark room.
- WateringDuring active growth, avoid both prolonged soaking and severe drying. A sheltered indoor pot and one exposed to Hong Kong rain need separate moisture checks.
- Flower stalks & feedingTidy old flower stalks at the base rather than clipping the leaf fans into shape. Feed healthy active growth according to the selected product label; the care graphic's interval is not universal.
- Leave the fans roomKeep leaves away from walls and moving doors. Choose a stable pot position and move it into shelter before strong winds.
Which plants work well alongside it?
For a bright, sheltered grouping, give Bird of Paradise the sunnier position. Keep these companions in separate pots with filtered light and individual watering checks, rather than exposing all of them to the same strong sun.

Peperomia Obtusifolia(Baby Rubber Plant)
Baby Rubber Plant forms a low, rounded-leaf layer. Position it beside the pot in filtered light, with room for the taller leaf fans to spread.

Snake Plant
Snake Plant gives a narrow upright contrast. Its pot should dry more between waterings; do not use the Bird of Paradise's watering schedule for both.

ZZ Plant
ZZ Plant adds arching foliage at a lower level. Keep it away from harsh direct sun and check its slower-drying pot separately.

Frequently asked questions
Bird of Paradise · Strelitzia reginae
Will it arrive in flower, or bloom every autumn to spring?
Flowers are not guaranteed on arrival. Maturity, light and growing conditions affect flowering, and overseas seasonal calendars do not guarantee a Hong Kong flowering period. Choose it for its foliage as well as its potential flowers.
Is this the giant, white-flowered Bird of Paradise?
This product is listed as Strelitzia reginae, the orange-and-blue flowering species. The giant white-flowered Strelitzia nicolai is a different species with a much larger eventual size. The listed 80–100 cm is not a mature height limit.
Why have the leaves split along their edges?
Wind and repeated rubbing can tear the broad leaves; a split alone does not identify a disease. Shelter the plant and leave space around the fans. Also check damaged leaves for pests or expanding spots before deciding what to remove.
Should I divide the clump or move it into a huge pot immediately?
Neither is necessary just because it has arrived. Let it settle and check root space first. When repotting is needed, increase pot size modestly; division is an option for an established large clump, not a routine first-day task.
