Planting & styling guide

How should I settle in this grafted lemon tree?

In a pot

  1. Choose an open outdoor spot and leave room for the listed 60–80 cm crown, away from doors and narrow routes.
  2. Keep the nursery pot while the plant settles. If it was kept under cover, increase exposure to strong sun gradually.
  3. Keep the root ball at its existing planting depth if repotting. Leave the graft union above the mix and use a pot with drainage holes.
  4. Feel the upper mix and check moisture deeper down before watering. Once the upper layer is drying, water through and let excess drain away.
  5. Check the trunk below the graft for vigorous suckers. Use clean secateurs to remove them at their origin, protecting the grafted crown.

Allow room for the pot and crown

100–120 cm is the approximate supplied height, not a mature growth limit. The original size graphic lists W35 × H32 cm for the pot; allow extra internal clearance and access to drainage when selecting an outer planter.

How should I care for it in Hong Kong?

  • SunlightChoose a sunny outdoor position. An enclosed room or deeply roofed balcony can look bright while giving the crown too little direct sun. Check the site at several times of day.
  • WateringCheck more often in hot, exposed weather and after prolonged rain. Empty saucers and outer pots; avoid alternating a soaked root ball with severe drying, especially while fruit is developing.
  • Variegation & feedingRemove fully green reverted shoots back to their origin if they appear in the variegated crown. Feed during active healthy growth according to the selected product label; fertiliser is not a quick fix for poor light or stressed roots.
  • Wind & fruiting branchesUse a stable position with room around the canopy. Before a typhoon, move the pot into shelter and check supports and ties without squeezing the trunk or graft.

Frequently asked questions

Grafted Variegated Lemon Tree · Citrus limon ‘Variegata’

Will it arrive with lemons, and fruit every April–October?

Flowers and fruit are not guaranteed on arrival. This is a living grafted tree, not a fixed crop schedule: timing and yield depend on its condition, sunlight and growing environment. Photographs show one stage of growth.

Why is a new branch completely green?

First find where it starts. A shoot below the graft is rootstock growth and should be removed at its origin. A fully green shoot within the variegated crown may be reversion; remove that shoot back to its origin to preserve the variegated growth.

Why do some tiny lemons fall after flowering?

Some early fruit drop is normal in citrus. For heavier drop, check root moisture, drainage and recent heat or wind stress before changing care. Adding extra fertiliser does not guarantee that every flower becomes a ripe lemon.

Can I clip it frequently to keep a small round crown?

Use light, selective pruning instead of repeatedly shearing all the tips. Citrus flowers on young growth, so frequent clipping can remove flowering shoots. Remove unwanted suckers and leave space for the grafted crown to develop.
