Make room
for a little sunlight.
An airy canopy and silvery leaves bring a quiet, natural texture to pale wood, linen and stone. Give your olive tree a place with real, direct sunshine.
A sunny balcony, a sheltered terrace, or a window with long periods of direct sun. A bright-looking room alone may not be enough.
Planting & styling guide
How do I choose a pot and a sunny position?
Set up the root zone
- Check that sunlight reaches the canopy, not just the floor.
- Choose a stable, draining pot with room around the root ball.
- Use a free-draining mix; keep the trunk base at its existing level.
- Keep drainage outlets clear; do not bury them in a sealed cover pot.
- Water through after planting and check that surplus water escapes.
In the ground
Choose a sunny, sheltered, well-drained site. Dig a hole wider than the root ball but no deeper; keep the root flare at soil level. Backfill, water and check that water drains away.
What changes during Hong Kong’s wet summer?
- SunlightA covered balcony may still be too shaded. Check the sun path and introduce a previously shaded tree to stronger light gradually.
- WateringAfter successive rainy days, check the root zone before adding water. A dry surface alone does not show how wet a deep pot remains.
- Pruning & feedingKeep the canopy open with light, selective pruning. Avoid treating poor growth in shade as a reason to add more fertiliser.
- Before a typhoonMove movable pots to a sheltered place before strong winds arrive; secure larger plants safely.
How do I create a sunny Mediterranean grouping?
Use the olive as the tall focal point, with herbs in separate lower pots. Keep all foliage in the sun rather than hiding the herbs beneath its crown.

Rosemary
Place its upright foliage beside the olive, leaving a gap for air and access to each pot.

Frequently asked questions
Indoor Olive Tree · Olea europaea
Is a bright living room enough?
Only if the position also receives ample direct sun. Check the actual light on the canopy; a bright interior away from windows can be unsuitable.
Read moreWill it produce olives in Hong Kong?
Not reliably. Flowering depends on cultivar and growing conditions, including winter temperatures. Treat this plant primarily as an ornamental tree.
Read moreCan it stay outside through the rainy season?
A sunny, sheltered position can work if the pot drains freely. During persistent rain, prevent repeated soaking and inspect the outlet and saucer.
Read moreCan I keep the crown small by cutting it hard?
Prefer light, selective pruning. Repeated heavy cutting removes the foliage the tree needs; choose a position with room for its existing crown.
