Planting & styling guide
How do I place and shape this 100–120 cm plant?
In a pot
- Place the crown near useful window light, not behind a tall cabinet or deep inside a corridor.
- Leave room for the spreading leaf clusters. Keep the pot stable and the foliage clear of doorways.
- Retain the nursery pot while it settles. Before adding water, check the upper mix and moisture further down; drain excess water from any outer pot.
- If repotting is needed, choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes and keep the original planting depth.
- Lightly shorten overly long stems during healthy growth to shape the crown. Wear gloves when pruning and avoid contact with sap.
Height is a starting size
100–120 cm is the supplied option. Final size depends on pruning, light and root space; the old image's mature measurements are not a guarantee. Decorative planters are separate.
How should I care for it in Hong Kong?
- SunlightUse bright, filtered window light indoors. A plant accustomed to indoor conditions should adjust gradually before moving to a brighter balcony.
- WateringLet the upper mix start to dry, then water thoroughly and drain. During humid weather, check rather than automatically watering on the usual day.
- Leaf checks & feedingClean dusty leaflets and inspect beneath clusters for pests. Feed only during healthy active growth, following the product label; extra fertiliser will not fix poor light or root stress.
- Airflow & shelterAvoid direct air-conditioner blasts. On a balcony, keep the pot back from exposed edges and move it to shelter before strong winds.
Which plants work well alongside it?
Use separate pots in a bright room and keep each crown in the light. These companions need their own moisture checks, especially the slower-drying Snake Plant and ZZ Plant.

Peperomia Obtusifolia(Baby Rubber Plant)
Baby Rubber Plant creates a lower, rounded-leaf layer beside the umbrella tree. Place it where the taller crown will not block its filtered light.

Snake Plant
Snake Plant gives a narrow upright contrast below the spreading crown. Let its pot dry more between waterings rather than watering both together.

ZZ Plant
ZZ Plant adds a lower arching outline. Keep it in its own pot and allow more drying than the umbrella tree; do not share a water-filled tray.

Frequently asked questions
Dwarf Umbrella Tree · Schefflera arboricola · Heptapleurum arboricola
Will this ‘dwarf’ tree stay 100–120 cm tall?
No. That is the supplied size. It remains a growing woody plant, and ‘dwarf’ does not mean it stops at that height. Light pruning and suitable root space help manage its shape.
Why are its umbrella-like leaf clusters dropping?
Both overly wet and overly dry roots can cause leaf drop. Check below the soil surface, drainage and recent changes in light or temperature before altering care; a fallen leaf alone does not identify the cause.
Can it fill a dark corner or go straight into full sun?
Choose bright filtered light for indoor use. A dark corner can lead to sparse growth, while sudden harsh sun can damage leaves accustomed to shade. Move to stronger light gradually.
Is it suitable where cats or dogs chew leaves?
It should be kept out of their reach. Chewing this plant can irritate pets, and sap can irritate sensitive skin. Pick a protected position and wear gloves for pruning.
