How to Choose Your Christmas Tree Height

Measure your space before choosing a tree. Allow for the ceiling, topper, pot and stand, so your tree fits comfortably with room to decorate.

Our American fresh-cut and China-grown rooted Christmas trees are both Noble Fir. Their size labels use different measurement methods, so compare the actual height rather than the number alone.

01

Measure the lowest point

Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction above the tree.

02

Allow for decorations

Toppers, stands and raised bases can add height.

03

Check the size method

Fresh-cut labels are ranges; rooted heights include the pot.

01

Measure these three places first

  1. 01

    Floor to the lowest obstruction

Measure at the intended position, not just the highest part of the room. Beams, pendant lights, fans and air-conditioning units may limit available height. For a sturdy raised platform, start measuring from its surface.

  2. 02

    Available width and walking space

Natural trees vary in width and branch density. Check that branches will not block doors, walkways or furniture, and keep access to windows and fire equipment clear. A height label does not promise a fixed width; ask us when space is limited.

  3. 03

    The route into your home

Check the doorway, corridor turns, lift and stairs. For trees of 9 ft and above, confirm handling requirements in advance. Fitting the final position is only part of the decision.

02

A “6 ft” label can mean two different sizes

American fresh-cut Noble Fir

The 4–14 ft labels mark the lower end of a height range: 5 ft means 5–6 ft, and 6 ft means 6–7 ft. Use the upper end when planning space, then allow for the extra installed height of your stand.

China-grown rooted Noble Fir

The 5–11 ft stated heights run from the bottom of the supplied pot to the tree tip, including the pot. A 6 ft tree is approximately 183 cm overall, not 6 ft of tree above the soil.

For the same size label, the rooted tree has a smaller tree body than the fresh-cut version. To compare their visual size, account for the pot or stand and the fresh-cut height range.

Feet and centimetres, side by side

1 ft = 30.48 cm. Values below are rounded to the nearest whole centimetre. Natural trees are approximately measured and vary individually.

Fresh-cut ranges do not include any extra height added by installing a stand. Rooted heights already include the supplied pot: do not deduct its height again. Any raised base or platform needs its own allowance.

04

Subtract the extras to find your usable height

Usable height = clear ceiling height − topper extension − clearance above

For a topper, count only the portion extending above the tree tip once fitted. Start with around 30 cm combined allowance for topper and clearance, then adjust to your decorations. Leave more space near hanging lights or ceiling fans.

Rooted tree

Overall height including pot ≤ usable height. The supplied pot is already included.

Fresh-cut tree

Upper end of the tree-height range + extra height from the installed stand ≤ usable height.

05

Example: a clear ceiling height of 250 cm

Assume a topper extends 20 cm above the tree, with another 10 cm clearance. Usable height is 250 − 20 − 10 = 220 cm. This example illustrates the method.

Rooted: consider the 7 ft size first

At about 213 cm including its pot, a 7 ft tree is within 220 cm. An 8 ft tree is about 244 cm, exceeding this example’s allowance. Confirm actual tree height and decorations before deciding.

Fresh-cut: use the upper end of the range

The 6 ft label has an upper height of about 213 cm, leaving around 7 cm for added stand height. If installation adds 10 cm, the total exceeds 220 cm. Consider the 5 ft label (5–6 ft), or ask us to confirm a suitable tree and stand.

The 10 cm stand allowance is an example only, not a specification or fixed height for our stands. Check the installed setup. Do not shorten the main trunk or root ball of a rooted tree to force it into a space.

06

Choose the feel you want within a size that fits

More room around the tree

A shorter tree is usually easier to decorate and maintain, while leaving more room to move in a smaller home. Confirm the actual branch width as well.

A taller focal point

A taller tree can suit a space with enough ceiling and floor room, but also needs more handling, decorating and maintenance space. Check height, width and access before sizing up.

07

Common questions about tree height

Can I buy a 7 ft tree for a 7 ft ceiling?

Do not match the numbers alone. The fresh-cut 7 ft label means 7–8 ft; a rooted 7 ft includes the pot. Both still need room for a topper and clearance. If ceiling height equals tree height, choose smaller or ask us first.

Why does a rooted 6 ft tree look smaller than a fresh-cut 6 ft?

The rooted 6 ft includes the pot, so the tree body occupies only part of that height. Fresh-cut 6 ft is a 6–7 ft tree-height range. They are the same Noble Fir variety, but labels alone do not compare tree-body size.

Does the chart give the exact height of every tree?

No. It converts size labels; natural height, width and shape vary. If your available space is close to the limit, share your measurements before ordering.

Can I trim the tip or change the pot to fit my ceiling?

Choose a suitable size first rather than relying on heavy tip pruning, shortening a rooted trunk, root cutting or repotting. For any fresh-cut adjustment, ask us first to protect its shape and installation.

Share your measurements. We can help you choose.

Send your clear ceiling height, available width, a placement photo and whether you prefer fresh-cut or rooted. Tell us the topper’s height if you plan to use one.
