GARDEN PLUS · LIGHT & PLACEMENT

Check the light first: where should your houseplant go?

Before choosing a plant for a corner, check the daylight that reaches it. Look at the actual position, rather than judging the room as a whole.

One room, several positions to consider.
Light placement checklist: check direct sun by the window, direction and obstructions beside it, and whether deeper rooms have enough light.

Three positions, three things to check

  1. By the window

Check whether sunlight falls directly on the leaves. Strong sun suits some plants; others need it filtered by a curtain or blind. Match the position to the species.

  2. Beside the window

Notice the window direction and anything blocking the sky outside. “Near a window” alone does not tell you how much light reaches the plant.

  3. Deeper in the room

Our eyes adapt to dimmer spaces. A room that looks bright to us can still offer too little light for plants. A dark spot may need suitable grow lighting.

Before you decide

Garden Plus suggests checking the same spot in the morning, around midday and later in the day. Note any direct sun, curtains and outdoor obstructions, then read the light requirements in the plant’s care guide.

There is no single distance from a window that suits every home. Weather and seasons change the light, too.

Choose for the light you have

Start with the conditions in your home, then explore the plant guides. For more help, send us a photo showing the proposed position and its window.
