Hong Kong growing tips
- Humid summer
- Check the root ball despite humid air
- West-facing window
- Screen hot afternoon exposure
- Air-conditioned room
- Keep broad leaf edges out of dry airflow
- Balcony wind
- Shelter large blades before strong winds
- Outer pot
- Keep the moist root ball out of pooled water
- Room clearance
- Allow for changing leaf angles

Broad leaves.
Room to unfold.
Make the leafy clump a focal point beside a chair, with open space for its broad blades rather than squeezing it into a narrow gap.
Use bright filtered daylight, away from direct air-conditioning and doors or curtains that brush the leaves. The scene illustrates the middle-height option.
Planting & styling guide
How do I settle in this large-leaved clump?
Protect stalks and root ball
- Allow the leaves to open naturally and check the width at their widest angle.
- Lift and support the pot; never carry the plant by its long leaf stalks.
- Keep the current pot initially and check moisture within the root ball.
- If roots need more space, use a slightly larger draining pot at the same planting depth.
- Moisten the mix evenly, let surplus water drain and check the outer pot.
Do not force the clump apart
New shoots arise from the rhizome. Do not pull stalks apart to make the plant wider; substantial division is a separate repotting task for a healthy established plant.
How do I protect the leaf surfaces in Hong Kong?
- Leaf positionGive the clump filtered daylight and clearance from curtains. Do not force a folding leaf flat to improve its appearance.
- Root-zone moistureAllow the surface to dry slightly, then check beneath it. Avoid prolonged drying of the whole root ball and water trapped in a cover pot.
- Waxy leaf backsSupport leaves during gentle cleaning. Do not scrub the natural silvery underside or use leaf-shine products to make it glossy. Feed healthy growth according to the fertiliser label.
- Wind and dry airLarge blades need shelter from strong balcony winds. Indoors, move the plant out of direct air-conditioning before treating dry edges as a fertiliser problem.
Which plants balance its broad paddle leaves?
Leave Calathea lutea room to change leaf angle. Use separate companion pots at the edge of its spread, with independent watering.

Peperomia Obtusifolia(Baby Rubber Plant)
Small rounded leaves form a low foreground without competing with the long upright stalks.

Snake Plant
Narrow upright foliage adds contrast at the side; its mix should dry more than the Calathea’s.

ZZ Plant
Glossy leaflets add a separate middle layer; avoid crowding the changing leaf spread.

Frequently asked questions
Calathea Lutea · Calathea lutea
Is the silvery underside mould?
An even silvery, waxy leaf back is a normal feature of this species. Do not scrub it off. New irregular patches, moving insects or damaged tissue need a closer inspection.
Read moreWhy do the leaves stand up or fold at night?
Day–night changes in leaf angle are normal. Compare the same leaf in daylight. Persistent tight curling, wilting or dry edges during the day warrants checking moisture, heat and airflow.
Read moreDo brown leaf edges mean it needs more fertiliser?
Not necessarily. Check for a dry root ball, trapped water and direct air-conditioning, and review recent feeding. Damaged edges will not turn green again; judge progress by healthy new growth.
Read moreHow do I choose between 100, 130 and 180 cm?
Check ceiling height, door access and the sideways spread of open leaves. Use the original gallery height chart to compare options; the scene size guide gives general room scale, not exact delivered dimensions.
