A SMALL NOTE FOR OCTOBER

Choosing plants for
Hong Kong’s October

Hong Kong Observatory’s 1991–2020 normals put October’s mean temperature at 25.7°C and rainfall at 120.3 mm, lower than summer. These are long-term averages, not a forecast for this October.

01

Warm days: match plants to the available light

The edit combines herbs, flowers and fruit trees for sunny spaces with foliage for bright interiors. Rosemary, lemon and bougainvillea need sun; choose monstera and areca palm for suitable indirect light indoors.

02

Less rain: check the soil before watering

October brings less rain on average than summer, but soil dries at different speeds with sun, wind and pot size. Rosemary and thyme especially need good drainage. Check soil moisture rather than watering to a fixed schedule.

03

Prepare for cooler days; give flowers and fruit time

Petunias, dianthus and marguerite daisies are options for cooler-season colour; watch ventilation and hot afternoon exposure while days remain warm. This edit is for choosing and caring for potted plants, not a universal October sowing or flowering calendar.
