A small tree.
A calmer corner.
Let the roots and green canopy take centre stage. A simple wooden surface and pale wall give this compact bonsai room to stand out.
A bright windowside desk or console, away from air-conditioning outlets. Filter strong afternoon sun with a sheer curtain and leave room for airflow.
Planting & styling guide
How do I maintain the exposed-root bonsai form?
Pot and root checks
- Identify the current soil line and the roots displayed above it.
- Check the pot’s drain outlet before placing it on furniture.
- If roots are crowded, plan repotting during active growth.
- Keep the existing planting depth and exposed-root outline.
- Leave substantial root pruning to an experienced bonsai grower.
Keeping its bonsai form
Keep this display plant in a pot. Ficus microcarpa is naturally a large tree; planting it in the ground changes its space and root-management needs.
How do I keep the canopy compact indoors?
- SunlightPosition the canopy near usable window light. Avoid a decorative shelf that stays shaded for most of the day.
- WateringCheck this pot separately from larger plants. Water the mix evenly when needed, then let it drain before returning it to furniture.
- Pruning & feedingTrim extending shoots to preserve the outline instead of repeatedly cutting every branch back. Check the tree’s vigour before feeding.
- Moving the displayLift the pot rather than pulling the trunk or exposed roots. Keep the new position similarly bright when rearranging a room.
How do I style a small bonsai without hiding its roots?
Leave open space around the trunk as the focal point. Put companion pots alongside, rather than planting over the exposed roots.

Frequently asked questions
Ficus Microcarpa Bonsai · Ficus microcarpa
Should the exposed roots be covered with soil?
Keep the current planting level. Those exposed trunk roots are part of the bonsai’s form; do not add soil simply to hide them.
Read moreCan I cut all the long shoots at once?
Start with selective light shaping and retain healthy foliage. If a major redesign or root reduction is needed, get bonsai-specific advice first.
Read moreWill this remain a miniature tree in the ground?
No. Ficus microcarpa is naturally a large tree. Its compact display relies on container care and pruning; planting it in the ground changes its root and space needs.
Read moreDoes its small size mean only a few drops of water?
No. When watering is needed, wet the root ball evenly and allow drainage. Repeated small top-ups may leave parts of the root ball dry.
