A slender shape.
A sunny garden accent.
Use the upright outline to frame an entrance or give a terrace corner height. Leave room around the foliage and keep walkways clear.
Choose an outdoor position with direct sun, freely draining pots and shelter from strong gusts. A shaded indoor corner is not a suitable long-term home.
Planting & styling guide
How do I settle in and repot Pencil Pine?
In a pot
- Choose a sunny outdoor spot; let a plant arriving from shade adjust gradually to stronger light.
- Check the root ball before watering. Water thoroughly when the upper mix starts to dry, then let excess water escape.
- Keep the supplied pot initially. If roots become crowded, choose a stable, slightly larger pot with open drainage holes.
- Use a free-draining mix and keep the original planting depth; do not bury the base of the trunk.
- After repotting, water through and check drainage. Keep the pot upright and out of strong wind while it settles.
Planning a garden position
Allow for future growth and check space near paths and buildings. The listed sale heights do not describe the tree's eventual height or spread.
How should I care for it in Hong Kong?
- SunlightPrioritise direct outdoor sun. Give the crown room instead of pressing it against a wall or dense neighbouring plants.
- WateringAfter heavy rain, check that the pot drains freely. During hot or dry spells, inspect the root ball more often; established trees and newly planted pots have different water needs.
- Pruning & feedingKeep pruning light and within green growth; avoid cutting into bare old wood. Feed a healthy, actively growing potted plant only as directed on the product label.
- Before a typhoonMove portable pots into a sheltered position before strong winds arrive, away from balcony edges. Do not leave loose pots or saucers where they can fall.
Which plants work well alongside it?
A sunny, free-draining terrace can suit these three companions. Style them in separate pots and check moisture individually, especially in the rainy season.

Rosemary
Rosemary adds aromatic, bushier foliage below the upright cypress; give it sun and excellent drainage.

Thyme
Thyme creates a low foreground layer. Keep its small pot out of standing water and prolonged soaking rain.

Indoor Olive Tree
Olive's silver-green, open canopy contrasts with the cypress column. Both need direct sun and well-drained roots.

Frequently asked questions
Pencil Pine · Cupressus sempervirens
Can Pencil Pine live indoors?
It is best treated as an outdoor tree with direct sunlight. A bright-looking living room or office can still be too shaded for long-term growth; choose a sunny terrace or garden instead.
Why is the foliage turning brown?
Both dry roots and poor drainage can cause stress; mites or disease may also be involved. Check moisture, drainage and the affected branches before changing care. Send clear photos if browning spreads; extra fertiliser is not a cure.
Will it stay at the height I buy?
No. The three options are supplied sizes. This is a growing tree, and its eventual size depends on cultivar, root space and conditions. Avoid hard pruning into bare wood to force it to remain small.
Which size and pot are included?
Choose 100–110, 120–140 or 150–170 cm. Each option includes a basic plastic nursery pot; decorative planters are separate. Confirm the current height, pot dimensions and whether the stated height includes the pot.
