Purple colour.
A sun-filled terrace.
Give the flowering crown room to spread beside a sunny wall. Keep its thorny branches away from seats, paths and places children can reach.
Choose direct outdoor sun and a pot that drains freely. Allow for the crown's width; a deep, shaded balcony may grow leaves but offer too little light for flowers.
Planting & styling guide
How should I settle in this potted Bougainvillea?
In a pot
- Choose a sunny outdoor position with room for the 60–70 cm crown; keep thorny branches out of walkways.
- If it arrives from shade, increase sun exposure gradually. Avoid moving it between indoor and outdoor positions every day.
- Keep the nursery pot initially. Check below the surface and the pot's weight before watering; water through when the upper mix has begun to dry.
- When repotting is needed, use a slightly larger pot with drainage. Keep the root ball intact and maintain its original planting depth.
- Support extending branches with soft ties. Wear thick gloves when handling or pruning; do not force stiff stems into shape.
Before choosing an outer planter
The listed nursery pot is approximately Ø30 × H23 cm. Check the planter's internal opening and depth, and leave drainage accessible. Decorative planters are sold separately.
How should I care for it in Hong Kong?
- SunlightObserve the actual sun reaching the crown through the day. A roof or neighbouring building can shade a balcony that otherwise looks bright.
- WateringIn wet weather, empty standing water and check deeper moisture before adding more. In hot sun, small pots dry faster; avoid both prolonged soaking and deliberate wilting.
- Flowers & pruningLightly tidy after the bracts fade. Repeatedly trimming fresh tips can remove developing flowers. Excess nitrogen may favour leaves; feed only a healthy growing plant as directed on the label.
- Before a typhoonBefore strong winds, move the pot away from exposed edges into shelter and secure loose growth. Keep thorny branches away from doors and escape routes.
Which plants work well alongside it?
Build a sunny terrace grouping in separate pots. Keep Bougainvillea's crown in direct light and judge each companion's watering needs separately.

Pencil Pine
Pencil Pine adds a slim green backdrop beside the purple crown. Position it to the side so it does not shade the flowers.

Rosemary
Rosemary forms a lower aromatic layer. Give its separate pot sun, airflow and excellent drainage.

Thyme
Thyme suits the bright front edge of the grouping. Keep its low foliage out from beneath dense branches and its small pot out of standing water.

Frequently asked questions
Purple Bougainvillea · Bougainvillea
Will my Bougainvillea arrive covered in purple flowers?
Not necessarily. The purple colour comes from bracts around tiny flowers, and the display varies with season and growing conditions. Your plant may arrive without flowers; the photographs show a flowering stage.
Why are there lots of leaves but few flowers?
Check direct sunlight first, then persistently wet soil, heavy nitrogen feeding and frequent tip pruning. Do not add extra feed or withhold water until the plant wilts as a quick fix.
Can I keep it inside or on a shaded balcony?
A sunny outdoor position is the better choice. A bright room or deeply covered balcony can still lack the direct light needed for a good bract display. Check how walls and awnings shade the plant through the day.
Can I trim the thorny branches to keep it compact?
Yes—lightly shape it after a display fades, using thick gloves and clean secateurs. Repeated clipping of new tips can reduce flowering. Leave space around the crown and use soft supports for extending shoots.
