Green for Small Spaces: arranging four plants

Start with one floor focal plant, add upright leaves on a low stand, then split two small pothos between a cabinet and a higher shelf. The aim is a green corner with room to live around it.

Four indoor plants in a compact bright window corner: a floor-level ZZ, a small snake plant on a low stand, and two pothos at cabinet and shelf heights.
A small pothos moves up to the shelf to show the difference between cabinet and shelf heights.

Give each pot a role

ZZ plant · anchor the floor

ZZ plant · anchor the floor

One plant · 100–120 cm

Place it beside the window, clear of the walking route and curtain movement. Leave space for the full spread of the stems instead of pushing the foliage into a narrow gap.

Snake plant · add a middle layer

Snake plant · add a middle layer

One plant · 30–40 cm

Use a steady low stand or low piece of furniture where there is suitable daylight. Its upright leaves can bridge the visual gap between the floor plant and cabinet; keep the pot securely supported.

First pothos · soften the cabinet

One pot · nursery pot about W12 × H10 cm

Set it well inside the cabinet edge with suitable surface protection. Let short stems trail where they will not catch in drawers, cables or a busy path.

Second pothos · lift the eye

Second pothos · lift the eye

One pot · nursery pot about W12 × H10 cm

Choose a secure shelf within reach of daylight and your hands. Keep the whole pot and saucer on the shelf, with room to lift them out for care. Do not assume the darkest top shelf is suitable.

Three checks before moving anything

Light before height

Look at each proposed position at different times. A higher shelf is not automatically brighter; window direction and outdoor obstructions matter.

Support the full weight

Check the shelf, brackets and stand for the weight of the plant, pot and wet growing medium. Pick up small pots by their base or pot body, not by stems.

Keep access clear

Leave your normal walking route open. Check that curtains and drawers still move freely, and keep each pot accessible for watering and inspection.

A group of four, with separate watering decisions

  • ZZ and snake plant: let the potting mix dry between waterings; check the actual pot before watering.
  • Pothos: check the upper potting mix separately and water when needed. Do not give every pot the same drink on the same day.
  • After watering, let excess water drain and empty saucers or outer pots.

Need a smaller floor plant?

The bundle also offers a 60–80 cm ZZ option. Measure the position and available access before choosing. New pothos growth and trailing length vary; arrange the plants you receive rather than expecting long vines immediately.
