Partial shade

Choose plants for bright windows and partial shade

Observe the light where the plant will stand, then narrow your choices by flowers, foliage, size and care.

Separate filtered light from direct sun

Partial sun usually means direct sunlight for part of the day. This differs from bright, indirect light indoors. Observe morning, midday and afternoon light, then check each plant’s requirements.

Choose a size that fits

Small & medium is a size group. Check the selected height, leaf spread and pot footprint. Leave growing room and clear access around larger plants.

Consider airflow, rain and humidity

Keep indoor plants away from direct air-conditioning airflow. Outdoors, consider harsh sun, wind and standing water. Adapt care to the plant and pot rather than treating partial shade as one condition for every species.

Half sun plant questions

Can a half sun plant live in a windowless room?

A partial shade or shade-tolerant label does not mean a plant can live without suitable light. Assess daylight or appropriate grow lighting at its position. Direct sun for part of the day is also different from an indoor spot with no direct sun.

Do plants in partial shade need less water?

Light alone does not determine watering. Plant type, potting mix, container, airflow and season affect how quickly moisture is used. Check the potting mix, then water according to the needs of the plant.

How to check soil moisture

Will flowering plants bloom all year in partial shade?

Not necessarily. Flowering depends on species, season and light, among other conditions. The Flowering filter identifies plants grown for flowers; it does not promise flowers on delivery or all year.

Is the planter shown included?

Check the product description and selected option for what is included. Confirm the plant height and planter dimensions before adding to your cart.

What should I check before delivery?

Review the delivery policy and ensure the plant and planter can pass through your entrance, lift and access route. For a large plant or a site with difficult access, contact us before ordering.
